Mounting Hardware

If you're planning on mounting the projector in the ceiling, you could go with the Atdec TH-WH-PJ-FM Telehook Universal Projector Flush Mount. The mount allows the projector to be rotated a full 360 degrees, and has a quick release for easy installation. That'll run you about 50 bucks.

Projection Screen

You'll want a screen to go along with your home theater projector. You could project it on a bare white wall, but you won't get the best possible performance out of your projector. The budget option is to get a manual screen, as opposed to an electronically operated one. One highly-rated manual screen is the Draper Screen Luma 106" Diameter. That's about 130 bucks.

Audio

If you're hooking your equipment up to your stereo, you'll already have excellent sound. That's the budget solution anyway.

Imagine a world without music. Difficult, at best. Music can change a mood, set a tone, deliver a message and transport you into an entirely different setting. The biggest thing that home theater and the iPod has done for the public is to bring an appreciation for involvement and convenience. While these are great things in of themselves, it has also removed the ability to evaluate the importance of an investment in better audio gear. Many times, I have been asked to design a system with a specific budget in mind. Often the primary goal at the onset is a home theater. However, very often when questioned about the percentage of use with music only, the response is usually around 50%. Mind you, there are dedicated theater rooms which will almost never see music unless it is a concert video. That being said, for those of us with both senses of sight and sound, I challenge you to sit through 2 movies, one with earplugs and watch the movie, the other with a blindfold and listening to the story. Which one do you think you will come away with knowing what happened? My guess is the one that you could hear but not see.

I am not diminishing the importance of good video, just that the weight should be more evenly distributed. It is true that if you build a home theater with no intent of using it for audio purposes, then pretty much anything is fair game. After all, there are few that have been at ground zero during an explosion and lived to tell what it sounded like.

I have always been a proponent of making a significant investment in the audio side of the system. This would include omitting the center channel and the rears during the initial purchase. After all, we know what a piano, guitar and many other musical instruments sound like. If we have a winning solution in the stereo department, the home theater almost invariably HAS to sound good. This is not in any way a suggestion to NOT do surround, just a thought of taking the starting budget and investing in a better 2 channel biased system. Still purchase the surround processor and amplifier or receiver for when you are ready to add the other elements. For more just Google. So, in conclusion you never have to be Home Alone. You can go wherever you want, be whomever you want to be, and be with anyone you want to be with. Just let the music take you there. (sorry, had to go there)

With the 120hz, the TV is able to input the image that comes between the first and second frames, making the transition much smoother, and doubles the frame rate from 60 to 120 for the best viewing possible.

Along with the four HDMI inputs, the TV also comes equipped with an Ethernet port, and the InfoLink RSS service to get up to date weather, sports scores, and local news. This is a nice touch for people who are eventually going to be building a media PC with their TV; everything looks great on this screen, even YouTube.

With TruSurround, the built in sound system, the bass is deep and dialog and sound effects are crisp and clear, even with the two speakers in the TV. It is compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels, giving you top notch virtual surround sound.

There is now a new entrant in the sub-notebook category, and that is the MSI Wind.

You'll find that there will be two main models in the USA. There is the cheaper SUSE Linux PC costing $399 and the more expensive Windows XP version at $549.

Both models share the same 1.6GHz AtomTM processor. They'll have a 3 USB ports, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and a 1.3M pixel webcam. The six-cell battery should give you about 6 hours of life on one charge; however, you may need to check if the 3 cell battery is fitted. The basic hard disc drive is 80 GB. The screen will be a 10 inch back-lit screen. The screen size and the hard drive give it a definite advantage over the ASUS EEE 901.

You will find that the Linux model will have 512Mb of RAM compared to 1 GB for the Windows XP version. There are two RAM slots, which will make it possible to enlarge the RAM available.

Options on the machine include up to a 320Mb hard drive, and you can even have a different outside color. The choices are black, white and pink.

You will find that the proposed Wind with an 8.9 inch screen is not planned to be sold in the USA.

Yet, the whole system weighs only 1 Kg (2.2 lb) and is so light in weight even for a purse or shoulder bag. It does not have a sold state hard drive and because of that the machine is not as robust as the ASUS EEE.

Is this going to be the second machine for a family or a small office? It is built to be used while traveling, and it is a good size to fit in the tray on the back of seats which are on aircraft or trains.

Yes, there are major differences between the MSI Wind and the ASUS EEE 1000, and the main one is the fact that the MSI can have far larger hard drives. They will both be served by the same AtomTM processor and it will be interesting when the speed comparisons are published which machine runs at the higher speed.

It will be very easy to mistake the Wind for an EEE as they have the same plastic look and feel. The color contrasts in the Wind will give a great contrast but when you have a white wind and a white ASUS EEE it will be difficult to immediately tell the difference. For you as the buyer, the size of the hard drive will probably be the deciding factor between the EEE and the Wind.

Though the modern microphones follow the same principle, they do it electronically. And thus, it captures pressure waves in the air and converts them into electric signals. Microphones are of different types, and they differ in their functioning too. Generally, there are five types of microphones commonly used for various purposes.

Condenser microphones: They are also called capacitors as the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor that responds to the sound waves. The movement that happens changes the capacitance of the capacitor and it is amplified to create a signal. However, these microphones run on a small battery to provide voltage across the capacitor. These microphones produce high quality audio signal and are commonly used in studio recordings.

Dynamic microphones: These microphones work through electromagnetic induction. In this system, the sound wave creates a vibration in the diaphragm which makes the magnet or the coil to move and this movement creates a small current. However, these microphones are very hardy and resistant to moisture and are quite economical. And thus, they are widely used for stage performances.

Ribbon microphones: In these microphones, a thin metal ribbon is suspended in a magnetic field. And it is moved by the sound wave that changes the current flowing through it. Ribbon microphones usually do not require phantom power but there are some ribbon microphones that have pre-amplifiers and so need phantom power.

Carbon microphones: These are perhaps the oldest and the simplest microphones that were once used in telephones. Carbon microphones use carbon dust and they have a thin metal diaphragm on one side. As the diaphragm is hit by the sound waves, it compresses the carbon dust that changes its resistance. By running a current through the carbon, the changing resistance changes the amount of current flow and thus produces an electrical signal. Although they are quite robust they cannot reproduce high quality sound and have limited frequency. But these can be used as a type of amplifiers.

Crystal microphones: These microphones have a diaphragm attached to a crystal that crates a signal when the sound wavers hit the diaphragm. Basically, the crystal microphone uses the theory of piezoelectricity. However, they are commonly used with vacuum tube equipment like domestic tape recorders.

Other than these types of microphones, there is another type of microphone that is widely used these days. It is called wireless microphones. They are portable and have a versatile way of recording and broadcasting sound, without a cable connection.
