Audiovox FPE2706DV - 27" LCD TV with modular DVD player - widescreen - 720p - HDTV

An affordable choice for home theater, the 27-inch Audiovox FPE2706DV saves space with its detachable bottom-mounted speakers and a removable tilting base, which enables you to mount the set to a wall with optional VESA-compatible hardware. And it saves even more space by eliminating the needs for a DVD player component, thanks to the slot-loading DVD player integrated into the back of this set. In addition to playing standard DVD movie and CD audio discs, it's also compatible with playing DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs as well as MP3 audio files and JPEG pictures. It also includes a three-way flash memory port that's compatible with Secure Digital, MMC, and Memory Stick media as well as a USB port for connecting a compatible digital audio player.

This set has a built-in 181-channel NTSC tuner as well as an ATSC tuner for over-the-air HD reception. You can also view high-definition programming (1080i/720p/480p/480i) when connected to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box via the component video inputs.

The FPE2706DV features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology, which helps to eliminate the jagginess found in non-HD video content. FaroudjaÕs unique DCDi algorithm identifies all the moving edges in a scene and adjusts the angle of interpolation at each pixel so that the interpolation always follows the edge instead of crossing it, eliminating staircasing or jagged edge artifacts.

This set also performs automatic 3:3/2:2 pulldown detection--a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.

This set has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 176-degree viewing angle, and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) You can also use this set as a PC monitor via the VGA connection. Other features include closed captioning, V-chip parental controls, and SRS surround sound. It provides the following connections:

  • Composite audio/video In: 1
  • S-Video In: 1
  • Component video In: 1
  • RF In: 1
  • PC VGA In: 1 (with PC audio mini-jack)
  • Headphone: 1

Tech Talk
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Customer Review: Broke twice and its hard to get parts
I would not buy this. I paid $600.00, and one week out of warranty it broke, It took me THREE months to try to get it repaired. No repair service could find parts. I finally got Audiovox to fix it, it cost me $100.00 just to mail it, and three months later, the same thing broke again. I would NOT BUY THIS TV!!!! Save yourself alot of aggrevation.
Customer Review: Nice Unit, value for money at the price i paid.
If i didn't pay only $500.00 for this i probably wouldnt be so excited about it.. but its a solid performer. All the things you expect from a quality LCD, no surprises. Mount it and forget it. The only thing i have a problem with is the range of the Remote, its a bit annoying when i'm pointing it at the display and nothing is happening while i'm pressing buttons frantically to get I love New york off the channel before the wife walks in. So, heres the deal. walk in to PC richards, and ask about the special on this unit.. either i'm a champion negoiator (i dont think so) or they have a great deal on this unit. Get it while you can, although they have no reference of this unit having a built in DVD player, neither did it refrence anything on the box that it had a DVD player, its priced as if it does not have one. Even the sales guy at PC Richards opened the box to check it!!

A projector can transform your family's home theater experience. When you are able to watch a movie on an 8-10 foot screen you can't help but get immersed in the action and experience things you have never experienced before.

But is a high definition projector the right choice for everyone? There are some obvious considerations such as room layout and whether you have a place to hang a large screen, whether you are able to ceiling mount a projector and where your seating is placed in relation to the screen. While they are important, probably the most important thing to consider when deciding if a home HD projector is right for you is the lighting in your viewing environment.

The quality of the image that the high definition projector is directly affected by the amount of ambient light that is in your viewing environment. The more light in the room, the more difficult it will be for the projector to produce a sharp picture with deep blacks and good shadow details.

The amount of ambient light will affect the lumens needed (brightness needed), the size of the image that you can project, as well as the distance from the screen that you can place your projector.

The best viewing environment for a high definition projector is one where there is complete light control. A basement for example is a great place for a home theater with a projector because you can turn out the lights and be in complete darkness. On the other hand if you have a living room with several door ways and windows you will want to seriously consider whether a home HD projector is the right choice for you.

Because you can not control the light in this type of environment you will need to do one of several things:

  1. Be satisfied with a washed out picture lacking in detail and contrast
  2. Increase your budget substantially to ensure you get a high definition projector with a significantly high lumen output to ensure a bright picture and even then there will be some tradeoffs in quality. Think about your local cinema. They always have the room darkened in order to produce the best image possible.
  3. Decide to be satisfied with an LCD or Plasma screen, even though they may be smaller then the screen size you were hoping for. An LCD especially is known for its ability to produce a bright image even in areas of bright lights.

High definition projectors have come a long way in the last few years in their ability to produce stunning images. They have continued to offer brighter output and higher contrast ratios while at the same time lowering their prices. So if you have an area where you have at least some ability to control the light in your room a home HD projector is certainly worthy of consideration.
